Wedding season

By Monique Chantelle *

Your mailbox is filling up with invitations, it must be wedding season. You are standing in your closet wondering what to wear. Since we live in South Florida let’s start with the outdoor invites. If you are invited to an outdoor wedding at a beach or garden, I love the idea of wearing a maxi dress with wedges or a chunky soled shoe so the heels don’t dig into the grass or sand. The fabric of the dress should be light weight so you can stay cool and look as though you are floating on air when you walk. If the dress is strapless wear a statement necklace. Go for pastel colors since we are in summer time. Another nice look for a daytime garden wedding is a full skirted dress with a wide brimmed hat and sandals.

For evening weddings that require “black tie” this is your time dress like a movie star. Think long elegant gowns similar to those worn at the Oscars. This is the type of event you bring the jewelry out of hiding and accessorize yourself. Or if you are a fashion risk taker, a form fitting women’s tuxedo suit would look gorgeous with a great pair of earrings. Also anything sparkly for evening weddings is also nice; it is a celebration of two people in love after all.

I’ve decoded some common dress codes that can be found on invites to help you plan your outfits better:

Dressy Casual/ Casual Chic Wear a skirt (a-line or full would look great) or dressy pants

Cocktail Attire Wear a knee length dress (for example the dress I wore to the bridal shower) or skirt again. Tailored pants with a nice blouse will also do.

Semi-Formal/ After Five Basically the same thing as cocktail attire. Think elegant separates.

Black Tie Optional Again a cocktail dress, I would do a more fancy dress than you would wear for a semi-formal. Something like what I wore to a wedding a few months back.

Black Tie I would insist on an evening gown. This is when you can dress as you would if you were a movie star. Although if you are a risk taker when it comes to fashion go for a tailored tuxedo pant suit.
