THE FIGHT OF COLOMBIAN PARENTS TO SAVE THE LIFE OF THEIR SON ANDRES FELIPE

(UPDATE May 28 2013.- Little Andrés Sanz has died. Please pray for the family and help with your donation here.

Jeanneth Sanz’s voice, a lady from Bogota 39, is firm, but gentle at the same time when she speaks in detail of the illness of her son Andres. Spiritual strength conveyed by this mother is hard to ignore. An ordinary woman in her position possibly had already resigned, but mothers are not like that. Neither are fathers who are willing to sacrifice everything for their children.

This is the case of  the Sanz, Rodrigo, a sales executive of 40 years and Jeanneth, a dentist, whose  lives  were  changed  in 2005, parents of Andres Felipe  (8) and  Esteban (13),  they are facing  the worst that can happen to any parent, that one of their children is  sick. “Andres was a healthy, fat, hyperactive and independent boy until three years ago,” says Jeanneth. However, while the family lived in Cali, the little one began to have repeated ear infections and respiratory problems. “After six months of this, he began to have diarrhea all the time and lose weight quickly,” she says. His abdomen is distended and also had lung infections.

Doctors in Colombia thought it was a cystic fibrosis sickness, because they had similar symptoms, but the children did not respond to treatments for that intestinal infection. Since Jeanneth and her husband are relatives (third cousins), studies were initiated to see genetic mutations,  she explains that  there are about 3,000 of them, and they were aware that in  their  country, they could not evaluate them all  but  only 170  genes of Andres  were  examined as  the laboratories didn’t have the ability to examine them all, they had to be sent to USA ,” says the Colombian mother.

When the Colombian doctors stopped given hope for Andres, his parents decided to continue fighting for the lives of  their children and came to the United States, where Jeanneth has relatives in Broward County, Florida. Along with the decision of traveling were the uncertainness of their illnesses and how to  keep Andres alive.

La familia Sanz“I think if we had remained in Colombia our son was already dead,” said Rodrigo Sanz in an earlier conversation with this medium. When they arrived, in late 2009, Andres was admitted to the Hospital Joe DiMaggio and began aggressive treatment with steroids. “The damage was worse because it immunosuppressed him” says Sanz., “Following  this treatment took away  all their defenses,” she adds. Because of this treatment.  Damage was done to the liver of Andres and to make matters worse, the child contracted five bacteria. One night, dramatically, was taken to Jackson Hospital in Miami, and the moving was not pleasant for the family, so they decided to take the child away.

“A neighbor was doing her residency at Miami Children’s Hospital and recommended that we go there,” said Jeanneth, and since 2010 Andres and Esteban are being examined in that Hospital. Erik Hernandez, gastroenterologist is treating them along with the immunologist, Vivian Hernandez, among other doctors.

“The doctors were puzzled and confused they ruled out all diseases and, they are only treating the symptoms,” says Sanz. “A parasite that may have come from Colombia lodges in the intestines of Andres. They are so microscopic that can rise to the liver and lungs. This type of parasite rules over patients ‘immunosuppressed’ (immunologically weak), “says the dentist.

Meanwhile, family, friends and members from the Christian church they attend, have helped them to carry their cross over the years. Due to illness of their sons they are in and out of Hospitals all the time.. At present, despite his eight years, the youngest weighs just 11 kilos and the appearance is that of a child with extreme malnutrition.  “These days everything fell on us,” admits Jeanneth. They had been given a home where they lived a few months, but had to return it, and at the same time Andres got fever and once again he had to be hospitalized.

Legally, The Sanz have applied for a deferred action since a year ago,(temporary residence)  but they have not received an answer yet. Jeanneth`s  father  asked for a change of status and  the I-130 was approved, while their tourist visas are extended every six months.

In April, the immunologist Vivian Hernandez of Miami Children’s Hospital discussed the case of Andres in a meeting and a doctor from the National Institute of Health (NIH), one of the most important hospitals in USA dedicated to clinical research, located in Bethesda, Maryland, was interested. Thanks to this were invited to the hospital, where they are now.

At the end of this note, studies at the NIH had already identified the gene called interleukin 21   which protects the immune system against infection or inflammation is altered in both Andres and Esteban but in the last one with less intensity. So his health problems are not as serious as those of his younger brother. “They are doing tests on how to combat it,” says Jeanneth Sanz.  Worldwide, only two similar cases have been reported, one in Germany, and the other one is the case of Andres and Esteban in USA.

The two children are receiving the same treatment to boost the immune system with antibiotics and immunoglobulin, which Andres has been receiving since a year ago.  About her staying at the NIH’s, the mother says “we are blessed,” for her to see Andres again smiling means everything. “This is a challenge for doctors to help others in the future,” She adds. But when that period ends at the NIH, the Sanz will return to Florida where they do not have a place to live and they need badly the generous support of the community.. They need our help. Your help is needed.

Despite the circumstances, Jeannette does not lose faith. “I think God has purpose great things for us,” he says. Andres’ disease allowed their relationship to strengthen and is now a family much more united and strong in their Christian faith, which consolidated in coming to America.

” Andres has been told, he is going  to die several times  I  said to my God that I do not  want to see him suffering so much  and  that  if He wants to spear his sufferings  to take him to Heavens because I can not stand his sacrifice any longer ” admits Jeanneth on her  most difficult moments. However, she says that God has given confirmation that Andrew is going to heal and She wants to give hope, as well,   to other mothers with sick children who are in the hospital.

“It is God who knows and His will is perfect, He knows more than any science,” she stressed.

The financial resources of the Sanz are completely dried up because the disease has drained any estate that may have brought. Family and friends have launched a campaign for the Sanz to buy a mobile home. The goal is to raise $ 20,000 to acquire it and have a place where to live when they return from Washington. If you want to help this family, there are many ways to do this, they are asking for prayers for the children’s health and any financial donation  is  welcome .
