Advance Child Tax Credit (AdvCTC) Free Tax Prep Days

This year, advance payments of the 2021 Child Tax Credit (CTC) will be made monthly from July through December to eligible taxpayers.  To receive the payments, families must file a 2020 tax return.

The IRS will host AdvCTC Free Tax Preparation Days, CTC outreach events taking place in 12 select cities. IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TAC), key community stakeholders and volunteers will help eligible families prepare and file tax returns.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 expands the CTC for tax year 2021

 

  • Taxpayers may receive part of their credit in 2021 before filing their 2021 tax return.
  • The credit for qualifying children is fully refundable, which means that taxpayers can benefit from the credit even if they don’t have earned income or don’t owe any income taxes. 
  • The maximum Child Tax Credit increased to $3,600 for children under the age of 6 (advance payments of up to $300 per month for each child) and to $3,000 per child for children between ages 6 and 17(advance payments of up to $250 per month for each child)                   .

Payments start July 15

 

You don’t need to take any action now if you’ve filed a 2020 tax return.

Eligible taxpayers who don’t want to receive advance payment of the 2021 Child Tax Credit will have the opportunity to unenroll from receiving the payments. http://www.irs.gov/childtaxcredit2021
