Casi cuarenta años después del embargo petrolero, el mapa energético mundial esta siendo rediseñado otra vez, pero ahora por la bonanza energética que está sucediendo, quien lo hubiera imaginado, en Estados Unidos.
Esta es una de las principales conclusiones presentadas la semana pasada por la Agencia Internacional de Energía, organización establecida, precisamente después del embargo petrolero, para aconsejar a las economías avanzadas en materia energética. Conforme al informe anual de la Agencia, presentado en París, Estados Unidos superará a Arabia Saudita, en 2020, como el mayor productor de petróleo. Previamente, la Agencia también pronosticó que Estados Unidos superará a Rusia, en 2015, como el mayor productor de gas natural.
Esta transformación resulta de la utilización de nuevas tecnologías en Estados Unidos, tales como la fracturación hidráulica, o “fracking” y la perforación horizontal. Ambas han generado aumentos espectaculares en la producción doméstica de petróleo y gas.
Por ejemplo, la Agencia Internacional de Energía proyecta que, en 2020, las importaciones de petróleo de Estados Unidos disminuirán a 4 millones de barriles por día, desde 10 millones de barriles diarios en este año. De hecho, debido a restricciones a las exportaciones de crudo,en 2011, Estados Unidos se convirtió en exportador neto de productos refinados de petróleo, tales como diésel y gasolina, lo cual no se veía desde 1949.
Algunos expertos han advertido que esto no significa que Estados Unidos se convertirá en autosuficiente o independiente en energía. Solo significa importar menos petróleo del Medio Oriente, la región más volátil del mundo.

ENERGY BOOM

Almost forty years after the 1973 oil embargo, the world energy map is being redrawn again, but this time by an energy boom happening, who could have imagined, in the United States.
This is one of the main conclusions presented last week by the International Energy Agency, an organization set up precisely after the oil embargo, to advise the industrialized economies on energy matters. According to the Agency’s annual report, presented at its headquarters in Paris, the United States will overtake Saudi Arabia, by 2020, as the world’s largest producer of oil. Previously, the agency also predicted that the United States will overtake Russia, by 2015, as the main producer of natural gas.
This transformation is the result of the utilization of new technologies in the United States, such as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking and horizontal drilling. Both have led to spectacular increases in the domestic production of oil and gas.
For instance, the International Energy Agency projects that, by 2020, US oil imports will decrease to 4 million barrels per day, from 10 million barrels per day this year. In fact, due to restrictions on exports of crude oil, in 2011, the United States became a net exporter of refined oil products, such as diesel and gasoline, which was not seen since 1949.
Some experts have warned that this does not mean that the United States will become energy independent, or self sufficient. It means importing less oil from the Middle East, the most volatile region in the world.
