City to Host Memorial Day Ceremony

On Monday, May 31, 2021 at 9:30 a.m., the city, in partnership with the Veterans Coalition of Coral Springs, will host a special Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Park (8601 Royal Palm Boulevard) to honor the brave men and women of our military who have given their lives in service to our nation. 
 
Of the event, Mayor Scott Brook said, “Though we will still be taking the necessary precautions to protect residents and staff from COVID-19, we are very excited to finally start hosting our events in person. Kicking-off our in-person events with our Memorial Day Ceremony is a demonstration of our staff’s dedication to honoring those who have sacrificed their lives for the protection and freedom of our nation.”
 
In attendance at the ceremony will be Commander Tom Melville, retired USN, who will serve as the featured speaker. After graduation from college in 1966, Tom completed college and was accepted into Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School. He was later commission to an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve. During his 27-year military career, Tom served in active-duty in the Naval Reserve Intelligence units in New York, Washington, D.C. and Florida. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation from the Naval Reserve Intelligence Command and nine Campaign Medals and Ribbons. He and his wife, Joanne, live in the City of Coral Springs. The have three adult children and six grandchildren.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs for their own comfort. Veterans, families and friends of Veterans of the local and surrounding communities can purchase an engraved brick to be placed at Veterans Park.
