Albizu University Announces Mental Health Awareness Plans

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and Albizu University invites the public to join two free events that promote community wellness and mental health. The virtual “15th Annual Mental Health Professional Workshop” will take place on Wednesday, May 17th, 2023, from 6:00 P.M. TO 8:00 P.M., and the first-ever “Albizu Clinic Health and Wellness Day” will be on Saturday, May 20th, 2023, from 10:00 A.M. TO 2:00 P.M. at the Albizu Clinic located at Albizu’s Miami Campus.

First up is the “15th Annual Mental Health Professional Workshop”. The event is sponsored by Albizu’s Master’s in Psychology programs and offers continuing education credits for mental health professionals and community members. The two-hour virtual session, “Grief and Loss: The Complexity of Suffering and Pathways of Hope,” will focus on grief and loss among families from diverse cultures, raising awareness of Albizu’s resources and services.

“The training will prepare attendees with invaluable insights on the intricacies of grief and loss, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Albizu plans to host more events focused on hands-on training and interactive workshops to destigmatize mental health issues and boost community resilience,” said Dr. Nelson E. Soto, President of Albizu University.

Additionally, the University will host its first-ever “Albizu Health and Wellness Day” at the Albizu Clinic. It is a free community event where all are invited to learn more about the clinic’s affordable and high-quality mental health services, resources, and support offerings. Onsite, guests can also participate in free breast cancer screenings, mindfulness yoga, children’s activities, and free dementia screenings in partnership with the University of Miami and The Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers. Food and refreshments will be provided as well.

The goal is to educate the community on mental health’s importance and the available wellness tools. Albizu University has sponsored the Albizu Clinic since 1980, providing mental health services to 15,000+ South Florida members, including children, adolescents, and adults.

President Nelson Soto adds that “We are proud of being part of this community, and at Albizu, we are committed to serving and helping its individuals and families. Through this event, we aim to build awareness around general wellness, our services, and our approach to mental health services.”

Albizu University has been a key player in Miami-Dade’s mental health community for over 40 years, offering quality service and training through culturally sensitive research and education. These events continue the legacy of founder Dr. Carlos Albizu’s philosophy: “Love reaches beyond knowledge.”

There is no need to register for the Albizu Health and Wellness Day.
