Developmentally challenged fan gets “up close” with the Waste Management trucks he loves

When Christopher Redfern of Pembroke Pines was younger, he became fascinated by the Waste Management truck that came by his home twice a week. He was so enthralled that he has filled his room with Waste Management items and even dressed as a Waste Management truck for Halloween one year.

Today, Redfern, now 22, who was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy that causes a developmental delay, is still a Waste Management super fan. When Waste Management learned of Christopher’s interest from his father, Christopher Redfern, Sr., a visit was arranged for the younger Christopher to visit Waste Management’s Southern Sanitation facility in Pompano Beach.

A team from Waste Management was on hand to welcome Christopher and help make his dream come true. During his visit, Christopher had an opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of a new, natural gas-fueled truck, honk the horn and stand on back of the truck, pulling levers to open and close the trash compactor, all of which captured his imagination when he was a child.

“This is a day my son will never forget and one that our family will always treasure,” said Christopher, Sr.

Waste Management presented Christopher with merchandise to add to his at-home collection including several Waste Management toy trucks, a hard hat, a vest, gloves  and balls.

“When we heard about Christopher’s story, we wanted to do something special for him,” said District Manager Jean Desilus. “We take every opportunity we can to connect with the local communities we serve. That’s important to us.”
