Florida is the state with the most small businesses, data reveals

Florida has the highest number of small businesses in the country, with more than 13,000 small businesses per 100,000 residents. 

Wyoming and Vermont rank second and third, respectively. 

West Virginia has the lowest number of small businesses in the country.

A new study has revealed which states have the highest number of small businesses. 

The study conducted by business consulting firm Venture Smarter investigated Office of Advocacy and US Census data to determine which states are brimming with small businesses. To reveal the states with the highest number of small businesses, the data was determined against each state’s population to reveal the number of small businesses for every 100,000 people in each state.

The research revealed that Florida has the highest percentage of small businesses in the country, with 13,370 small businesses per 100,000 residents. In total, there are 2,979,054 registered businesses in Florida, with 2,974,046 being small businesses. Florida is a huge tourist hotspot, being home to both Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, which can explain the substantial number of small businesses as there is a likelihood for substantial amounts of foot traffic.  

 

In second place is Wyoming, which has 12,398 small businesses per 100,000 people. Wyoming has a total of 72,901 registered businesses, with a whopping 72,081 being small businesses. Wyoming is home to two national parks, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton, both of which attract tourists, which create a thriving hub for small businesses. 

 

Vermont follows in third place with a total of 12,191 small businesses per 100,000 people. The state has 79,666 total registered businesses, with 78,883 being small businesses.  

 

The fourth state with the most small businesses is Colorado, which has 11,836 small businesses per 100,000 residents. Out of the 694,753 registered businesses, 691,230 are small businesses.  

 

New York takes fifth place, with 11,525 small businesses per 100,000 people. The state has over 2,272,792 registered businesses, with 2,267,870 being small businesses. New York is a global financial hub, with an entrepreneurial culture that makes it a thriving environment for small businesses.
