Preparándose para la próxima crisis

El décimo aniversario de la declaración de bancarrota del banco de inversión Lehman Brothers es el 18 de septiembre. Hay consenso que esta bancarrota marcó el comienzo de la Gran Recesión, el retroceso más profundo de la economía estadounidense desde la Gran Depresión de 1929.

Entre los comentarios más relevantes sobre estos acontecimientos, hay una columna de opinión en el New York Times (090918) titulada “Preparándose para la próxima crisis.” Está firmada por tres reguladores financieros prominentes, quienes manejaron la emergencia en aquellos días, el jefe del banco central Ben S. Bernanke, el jefe del Banco de la Reserva Federal de Nueva York, Timothy F. Geithner y el ex Secretario del Tesoro Henry M. Paulson.

Sobre los factores que contribuyeron a la emergencia, reconocen que el anticuado sistema regulatorio les proporcionó “autoridad limitada para responder” al pánico financiero. Sin embargo, se espera que esa deficiencia haya sido corregida por la Ley Dodd Frank de 2010, aunque hay dudas respecto a la capacidad del banco central de actuar como prestamista de última instancia.

Sobre el futuro, muchos se preguntan si puede ocurrir otra Gran Recesión. El hecho es que las dos recesiones anteriores fueron precedidas por alzas en la bolsa de valores, la llamada “Alza de las Dot Coms,” que duró hasta el año 2000 y la “Burbuja de la Vivienda,” la cual estalló en 2007. Por ende, hay preocupación respecto al alza de la actualidad, la cual el 9 de marzo puede convertirse en la más prolongada jamás registrada. Esta vez, el alza está siendo conducida por los conocidos gigantes de Internet, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google) y Microsoft.

Prepping for the Next Crisis

The tenth anniversary of the declaration of bankruptcy by the Lehman Brothers investment bank is on September 18. There is agreement that this bankruptcy marks the start of the Great Recession, the most profound setback of the US economy, since the Great Depression of 1929.

Among the most relevant comments on these events, there is one opinion piece in The New York Times (090918) titled “Prepping for the Next Crisis.” It is signed by three prominent financial regulators, who managed the emergency in those days, the head of the central bank Ben S. Bernanke, the head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York Timothy F. Geithner and former Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson.

On the factors contributing to the emergency, they recognize an antiquated regulatory system provided “limited authority to respond” to the financial panic. However, it is expected that this deficiency has been corrected by the Dodd Frank Act of 2010, although there are doubts about the central bank’s capacity to act as lender of last resort.

On the future, many are asking if another Great Recession can happen again. The fact is the previous two recessions were preceded by stock market rallies, the so called “Dot-Com Boom,” which lasted until the year 2000 and the Housing Bubble, which burst in 2007. Therefore, there is concern about the present stock rally, which next March 9 may become the longest on record. This time, the boom is led by the so called Internet giants, Apple, Amazon, Alphabet (Google) and Microsoft.
