Robots Built by High School Students to Battle at Local Competition

High school students from across South Florida are making their way to the Broward County Convention Center to participate in the 2024 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). This exciting event brings together high school students from various backgrounds to showcase their skills in designing, building robots and creativity.
“We are excited to welcome back this year’s robotics season and youth participants,” said FIRST South Florida Regional Director, Sandra Contreras. “Every season brings on an exciting new theme and continues to empower students to embrace discovery, innovation and collaboration. It leaves us with great optimism that our next generation is developing the necessary skills and self-esteem to build a better future.”
FIRST is a robotics community that prepares young innovators for the future. As the world’s leading youth-serving nonprofit advancing STEM education, FIRST has combined the rigor of STEM learning with the fun and excitement of traditional sports and the inspiration that comes from the community through programs that have a proven impact on learning, interest and skill-building inside and outside of the classroom. Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is a returning sponsor of the FIRST Robotics competitions.
“We are thrilled and deeply honored to be the presenting co-sponsor of the 2024 FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Florida Power & Light Company Vice President of External Affairs and Economic Development Pam Rauch. “This event truly embodies our commitment to nurturing the next generation of bright minds and future leaders. We recognize the fundamental importance of fostering STEM education and creativity while empowering our youth to drive positive change. This competition allows us to help foster the incredible imagination, teamwork and problem-solving skills that these talented students embrace during the competition.”
FPL’s own “Robot Urgent Care” welders and machinists will be there to help teams by repairing students’ robots from any damage done during the competition.
The event will bring together teams of students who have spent countless hours preparing their robots for the competition. Each team will face a series of challenges and obstacles, all designed to test their ingenuity and collaboration. Supporting this competition and these teams is one more way we’re working with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to live and work. Participants will not only compete for prizes but will also gain valuable experience, build lasting relationships, and enhance their problem-solving abilities through the thrilling journey offered by the First Robotics Competition.
Broward County’s First Robotics Competition is made possible through the concerted efforts of dedicated community leaders, educational institutions, and generous sponsors.
The competition will take place Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. For further information about the 2024 FIRST Robotics Competition, please visit www.soflofrc.FIRSTinFlorida.org
